  • Bike: 2016 Scott Genius LT 710
  • Course Description: 29 miles and about 3,000 ft of elevation gain
  • Location: Klondike Bluffs Trail System, Moab, UT
  • Class: Expert Men
  • Result: 3rd Place

First enduro race of the year is in the books! I was excited to see where I was fitness-wise on this notoriously pedal-heavy course. I felt like I was going to die at times but ultimately survived and earned 3rd place in Expert Men. A solid start to the season! The course was filled with relentless slick rock combined with punchy climbs to make for an exhausting day on the bike. Stage 1 started with tight switchbacks on silt covered slick
-rock followed by a long sustained flat run-out, punchy climb, and finished with wide-open slick rock.

Stage 1 was my best showing no doubt because of the new bike I’m riding this year (from Pedal Pushers Cyclery), the 2016 Scott Genius LT. Scott’s Genius (and Spark) line of bikes incorporates a patented remote lock out of front and rear suspension called Twin Lock.  This tool has really grown on me allowing for on-the-fly adjustment of rear travel and compression settings. I can go from riding a beastly 170 mm travel trail bike to a 110 mm XC machine for climbs with a flick of the lever.

Being able to lock out the rear end and put power to the pedals efficiently definitely helped me win Stage 1. Stages 2, 3, and 4 were all a blur of slick rock, dirt and gorgeous Moab scenery. Scott Enduro Cupput on a great event and I would definitely recommend it to others considering Enduro racing for next year. With some of the top Big Mountain Enduro (BME) amateurs present, I felt good about how I placed. We closed out the epic weekend with a 15 mile ride out at the Amasaback trail system, headed back to Colorado, and now I’m looking forward to the Santa Fe BME race May 22nd!
